Lace Dress Encrusted with Flowers
anonymous, c. 1930 - c. 1939
The floral motifs found in printed fabric were regularly cut out and used as appliqués (they were sewn on) or encrustations (they were inset) to embellish a different fabric. Both techniques feature in this dress. The loose appliquéd flowers on the crêpe underdress form a striking symmetrical pattern through the encrusted flowers on the lace overdress.
