Getting started with the collection:
Gnarled Trees near the Water
Roelant Savery (c. 1578-1639), pen and brown ink, brush and grey-brown, blue and pink washes, over a sketch in black chalk, c. 1606-1607
In this drawing Savery renders oddities of nature in an almost hair-raising manner. His gnarled trees resemble demonic creatures possessed by a will of their own. The drawing is squared in black chalk so that it can be transferred to a larger format. Perhaps it was intended as a preliminary study for a drawing or painting of larger dimensions
