Keten van de koning van Ternate

Gold chain, probably made in Batavia. This chain was presented around 1676 by the VOC to the sultan of Ternate (Moluccas) to mark his coronation in 1675. In the 1950s the last sultan of Ternate sold the chain.

Explanatory note

Volgens een verklaring van I.M. Djabir Sjah, gedateerd 10 augustus 1951, is de keten in 1606 door prins Maurits ten geschenke aangeboden aan koning Sahid. In dat geval zou het gaan om Hollands werk. Sterke overeenkomst met de keten van Aroe Palakka uit 1672 doet echter anders vermoeden (informatie prof. dr. W. Coolhaas - documentatiemap NG). Vermoedelijk betreft het de keten die door de gouverneur-generaal en de Raden van Indië in 1676 is geschonken aan de toenmalige koning van Ternate.
