The Breach of the Saint Anthony’s Dike near Amsterdam

Pieter Nolpe (c. 1613-1653), after a design by Willem Schellinks (1627-1678), etching, engraving, c. 1651

The severe weather has reached its dramatic climax. The storm that struck from the northwest buffeted the dike causing it to burst and bring water crashing down onto the low-lying land – recently reclaimed polders. Nearby Amsterdam was also not spared. The water that sloshed over the dikes in the city itself reached such a high level that one could move about the streets by boat.
