Hercules with the Broken Column

Jan Pieter van Baurscheit (I), c. 1722 - c. 1728

This is one of a group of four statues, all of which are in this garden. The statues originally stood in the garden of Bosch en Hoven, a country estate near Haarlem. They were made by Jan Pieter Baurscheit the Elder, an Antwerp sculptor and architect often engaged by patrons in the Dutch Republic.

    Op een vierkante plint staat Hercules met het linkerbeen naar voren voor het geprofileerde voetstuk van de gebroken zuil, die hij met zijn linkerarm omklemt en waarvan hij het bovenstuk met de rechterarm en hand tegen zijn heup klemt. Zijn gebaarde kop is geheel, het bovenlichaam iets naar rechts gewend. De leeuwenhuid, die door de linkerhand tegen de zuil wordt opgehouden, hangt tussen de benen tot op de grond af.
