Genealogy of the Lords and Counts of Culemborg

attributed to Nicolaes de Kemp, c. 1590

To chronicle his noble ancestry, the first count of Culemborg, Floris I of Pallandt, commissioned an illuminated genealogy of his family. Depicted in it are 55 lords and ladies of noble birth. The genealogical series of drawings spans around 800 years and 26 generations.

    In gepreegde varkensleren band gebonden handschrift op 55 bladen van perkament met een beschrijving van het geslacht van de heren en graven van Culemborg. Het handschrift heeft twee sluitingen van metaal en bevat een allegorische titelpagina (frontispice), gevolgd door een blad met een ingekleurde tekening van een man (heraut) in wapenrok. Hierna volgen 51 bladen, grotendeels eenzijdig betekend en beschreven, van mannen en vrouwen uit het geslacht-Culemborg, beginnend bij Boudewijn van Kleef en eindigend bij Margriet van Pallandt (1510-1593). De mannen en vrouwen staan steeds op twee bladen tegenover elkaar, waarbij de achterzijde van de bladen over het algemeen blanco is en een enkele maal met tekst beschreven. Alle tekeningen zijn gekleurd en alle tekeningen, zowel van mannen als van vrouwen, tonen een persoon op een plint die een wapenschild vasthoudt, dat op de plint rust. De hoofden zijn - hoewel merendeels uiteraard geen portretten - opvallend precies en fijn getekend. De kleding van de figuren is uitbundig en in kleur weergegeven. Opvallend hierbij zijn de patronen en de stofweergave, die een 'platte' indruk maken, en de vaak grote hoofddeksels. De houding van de verschillende figuren is vaak levendig. Onder de plint staat steeds een handgeschreven toelichting, die de persoon identificeert en in de genealogische lijn zet.

Explanatory note

  • De tekeningen worden op basis van archiefbronnen toegeschreven aan Nicolaes de Kemp (ca. 1550-1600) en worden gedateerd ca. 1590-1593. De teksten lijken gezien het handschrift begin 17de-eeuws. De band is laat 19de-eeuws.
