Bouquet

Henriëtte Geertruida Knip (1783-1842), watercolour, c. 1820

Henriëtte Knip reinterpreted the genre of still life by presenting the flowers like a bouquet, without a vase or other background elements. Here she brought out the freshness of the flowers with the dewdrop on a pink peony and the upturned stamens of a lily. While Knip also specialized in oil painting, her inventive watercolour compositions won her accolades from art academies in Paris and Amsterdam.
