Doll’s House of Petronella Oortman

Jacob Appel (1680–1751), oil on parchment, laid down on canvas, c. 1710

This doll’s house was so expensive that a painting was made of it. In assembling a doll’s house, wealthy ladies showed the ideal version of a Dutch household. This included a Black servant, seen in the left room on the middle floor. All of the original dolls have been lost, except for a baby in a cradle.
