Explanatory note

  • De dobbelaar stelt Nicolas Fonvielle voor, een verarmde knopenmaker, die met vrienden dobbelde om bier. Voor deze prent, een van de eerste van Chodowiecki, liet hij zich inspireren door een tekening van Rembrandt. Hij signeerde met het pseudoniem 'Huquier' en voorzag de prent van een fictief uitgeversadres.
