Design for a Cake Server

Mathieu Lauweriks (1864-1932), pencil, with pen and red and black ink on tracing paper, 1913

The principles of designing ‘by system’ are evident in this design for a cake server. The basic shape is a triangle within which smaller circles and triangles define the proportions and dimensions of the design. The cake server is drawn life-size in front and side views, and a natural form unfolds from the tangle of geometric shapes.
