Getting started with the collection:
Departure of Charles II from Scheveningen
Pieter Hendricksz Schut (c. 1619–after 1666), etching and engraving, 1660
Charles II’s embarkation was witnessed by large crowds. Surviving visual records correspond closely with written accounts of the day, such as that in the Hollandtse Mercurius: ‘many hundreds of carriages could be counted, still more carts, spectators and horses. Pedestrians blackened the road from The Hague to Scheveningen, and, as for the beach, as far as the eye could see. Never have more people been seen together in Holland.’
