The Entombment

As was often the case, Rembrandt was not immediately satisfied. Here he darkened the scene further with etching and drypoint to such an extent that the figures around Christ can be distinguished only in those few spots where the light falls. He printed this impression on vellum with heavy plate tone (a filmy layer of ink covering the image), which yielded a deep, subdued tonality.
