The Flagellation

Luca di Tommè (c. 1330–after 1389), Siena, c. 1365, tempera on panel

Like many small paintings of the period, this came from a series of predella panels formerly on the base of a large altarpiece. Such panels often showed the Virgin and Child accompanied by a few standing saints. Sometimes, however, artists had more freedom in the choice and handling of predella scenes, while the main altarpiece itself was usually fairly conventional.
