Cottage with White Paling among Trees

quill and reed pen and brown ink, with brown wash and opaque white, later additions in greyish-mauve wash, c. 1648

Rembrandt drew this little house on the Spaarndammerdijk during one of his walks around Amsterdam. The drawing served as the starting point for the 1648 etching. There are a number of differences between the drawing and the print. The etching is much smaller, the trees have a completely different shape, and Rembrandt added various objects to it, such as a horse’s skull.
