Getting started with the collection:
Construction of the North Sea Canal
Rudolph Guicherit, 1866
At his death in 1897 Rudolph Guicherit was no longer a photographer, but a superintendent at the Rijksmuseum. Had he lived a bit longer, he might have also done his rounds in this gallery. The Philips Wing, however, was only built in 1909. In 1866 Guicherit took four photographs of the North Sea Canal, which served as a shorter and better connection between the port of Amsterdam and the North Sea.
