Explanatory note

  • De prent maakt deel uit van een negendelige serie met ceremoniële kledij van de Engelse adel. De eerste staat werd als onderdeel van bovengenoemde serie mogelijk door Thomas Jenner opgenomen onder de titel 'The Creation Robes of the Nobility in 9-Plates' in zijn 'A Catalogue of Severall Bookes', 1662. De genummerde staten werden later door John Bowles uitgegeven onder de titel 'Hollar's Habits, or the Nobility in their Creation', ca. 1732. Hollar werkte naar ontwerpen uit Richard Glover's 'Nobilitas politica vel civilis', Londen, 1608.
