Explanatory note

  • Illustratie bij de Metamorfosen van Ovidius, afkomstig uit de publicatie: Posthius, Johannes. Tetrasticha in Ovidii metam. Frankfurt am Main: Georg Rab en Sigmund Feyerabend en erven Weigand Han, 1569. De voorstellingen en ornamentranden van deze boekillustraties zijn van twee aparte blokken gedrukt. Beide werden afzonderlijk van elkaar ook gebruikt voor andere publicaties, en de ornamentranden werden eveneens binnen deze publicatie meerdere keren gebruikt. Bij deze prent is de voorstelling van Cephalus en Aurora op de verkeerde pagina gedrukt. De titel en tekst verwijzen naar het verhaal van Picus die door Circe in een specht wordt veranderd.
