Barrel Bottom with Mark Witsen

unknown, in or before 1751

These barrel bottoms bear the marks of the plantation owners. Many plantations had their own carpentry shed where enslaved people crafted barrels and crates to transport goods. In 1751, the merchant ship ’t Hart returned from Surinam with hundreds of barrels full of merchandise on board. The ship sank in heavy weather near Texel, an island off the Dutch coast.
