Arnout Tholinx

Rembrandt van Rijn, c. 1656

Arnout Tholinx was a celebrated Amsterdam physician and the brother-in-law of Rembrandt’s friend Jan Six. Rembrandt’s portrayal of Tholinx is masterful. He is interrupted while reading, spectacles in hand, and looks out at us expectantly. Rembrandt emphasizes Tholinx’s eyes by having additional light fall on them just below the brim of his hat.
