Allegory of the treaty between the Republic and the United States, 1782. On 7 October 1782 the Republic and the United States signed a treaty of trade and friendship in The Hague. Two personifications: the Netherlands, on the right with a liberty hat on a spear, offers a hand to America. Meanwhile, an Indian holds a horn of plenty. The fruit from the cornucopia and the tobacco roll in the foreground on the left refer to the results that the treaty was expected to produce.
