Allegory of the Primacy of the ‘True Faith’ in England
Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711), etching, c. 1689-1690
The arrival of the Protestant William III to England, leading an invading army, put an end to the rule of the Catholic king James II. Dressed as a Roman commander, William III presents a sealed Bible to the English Maid. She lies alone in bed, abandoned by her lord and master – the fugitive James II.
