When here and afar meet: Western art in Yamagata, Western art in Takaoka

Uittreksel

"Building on the scope of previous NMWA national touring exhibitions, this exhibition adds new concepts and methods to the touring exhibition format. These new elements include the presentation of the NMWA artworks alongside works drawn from each venue museum's collections (including some on-deposit items) and artworks and reference materials borrowed from other organizations. Working from that shared basic concept, the display and combination of artworks at each venue touch on the specific memories and ideas of the artists born in or related to the venue locale, all as part of an attempt to think about Western art in a new way. The memories of the two local sculptors who both studied in Europe in the 1900s, Yamagata-born Shinkai Taketaro (1868-1927) and Takaoka-born [Honpo] Gitaro (1875-1907), were the starting point for this approach. The Yamagata Museum of Art not only houses works by other local sculptors and Western-style painters, it also displays the Yoshino Gypsum Collection--one of Japan's finest collections of modern Western painting--which is on deposit at the museum. Meanwhile, the Takaoka Art Museum--opened in 1951 and celebrating the 70th anniversary of its founding in 2021--resonates with memories of Hayashi Tadamasa, the major art dealer and a Takaoka native renowned for his pioneering work during the Meiji period bridging the arts and cultures of Japan and the West."-- Preface (page [5]).
