Uittreksel

"Emulation and Admiration: Two Stories of Collecting European ArtーEuropean Master Paintings from the San Diego Museum of Art and the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo tells the parallel tales of two cultural institutions born in the twentieth century, both informed by the example of the great historic art collections of the European capitals. The goal of this exhibition, and its handsome accompanying catalogue, is that visitors will come away with a deeper appreciation of the richness of the Western art tradition and experience art's unique ability to bring humanity together across cultural divides. Visitors will see works ranging from Giotto's masterful God the Father with Angels painted in Florence in the 1330s to the sun-drenched Impressionism of Sorolla of the 1900s. About ninety works of art spanning six centuries, arranged in complementary groups rich in dialogue between the two collections, take the viewer on a journey through the story of Western art"-- Director's foreword (page [5]).
