The photographic etchings have been produced by the cliché-verre ("glass print") technique, in which an image is etched through an opaque coating on a glass plate, and then printed on light-sensitive paper in a photographic darkroom. The technique was used in the 1850s by French artists such as Camille Corot and Jean-François Millet, and in the 20th century notably by the Hungarian-American designer Gyorgy Kepes. For additional information, see the entry "Cliché-verre" in The Grove encyclopedia of materials and techniques in art, edited by Gerald W.R. Ward. Oxford: Oxford University Press, c2008, pages 107-109.
