Mizuno decided this year to make a masterpiece of a sneaker from its lifestyle collection. The result – inspired by Vermeer’s The Milkmaid – is the limited edition Contender Vermeer. The standout features of this design are the subtle, understated colours and the focus on hidden details in this magnificent work of art.
Mizuno has also created a special running shoe inspired by this famous painting by Vermeer. This official shoe for the TCS Amsterdam Marathon 2023 was created through a partnership between Mizuno and the Rijksmuseum. This year, Mizuno is the main sponsor of the event for the 24th time. The TCS Amsterdam Marathon, one of Europe’s biggest annual running events, takes place on 15 October 2023.
Mizuno Contender Vermeer
Johannes Vermeer is one of the Netherlands most famous 17th-century painters, celebrated for his intimate and serene domestic scenes. Elements of the shoe design include references to the blue fabric worn by the milkmaid and the Delftware cupid tiles. The tongue of the shoe features a print of The Milkmaid, in homage to the masterpiece. The painting also features on the insoles – each one highlights a different aspect of the work. The left insole focuses on the slow pouring of the milk, and the precision of that gesture – the only movement in the painting. The right insole is devoted to the gorgeous colours worn by the milkmaid.
The Mizuno Contender Vermeer is available in different models for women and men at the Rijksmuseum and at www.mizuno.com. Recommended retail price €140.
Mizuno Wave Rider 27 Amsterdam

These shoes are ideal for your daily run, and suitable for both endurance and high-speed interval training. The Wave Rider features a MIZUNO ENERZY midsole that provides extra cushioning and energy return.
