Drawn from life

From the series Get ready... get set... draw!

The Amsterdam artist Adriaen van de Velde (1636-1672) was the son and brother of two famous seascape painters: Willem van de Velde the Elder and the Younger. Adriaen painted mainly landscapes, beach views and biblical scenes. He would often prepare for his paintings by drawing studies of the people and animals that would appear in the final work – as is the case here.
