Wine glass

anonymous, c. 1725 - c. 1750

Engraved along the rim of this glass are the words ’s Lands welvaren(‘the country’s [good] health’). The Dutch word for ‘health or prosperity’ (welvaren), when separated (wel varen), translates literally as ‘good sailing’, a double meaning illustrated here by the threemaster under sail. This glass could thus be used to toast the good fortune of the Netherlands.
