In early 1694 some 30 Dutch warships set sail for the Mediterranean. They were sent to protect a merchant fleet from French attacks. In the Straits of Gibraltar they ran into a heavy storm. Various ships sank or were seriously damaged, including the Hollandia, portrayed centre right in the painting.

Ludolf Bakhuysen heeft de dreiging van de storm prachtig getroffen. Het laatste zonlicht dat tussen de donkergrijze wolken door op de golven valt, maakt het natuurgeweld voelbaar. Het gaat waarschijnlijk niet om een historische gebeurtenis. Voorstellingen als deze verwijzen naar de onvoorspelbaarheid van de elementen en de nietigheid van de mens, en waren erg populair in de 17de eeuw. Naar het schijnt, zocht Bakhuysen bij slecht weer het water op om de weersinvloeden op lucht en water goed te kunnen bestuderen.
