Getting started with the collection:
Portrait of Nicolaas Henneman
attributed to William Henry Fox Talbot, 1842
Talbot laid the foundation for photography’s golden future with his invention of the negative-positive process. It allowed the photographer to print a photog -raph multiple times. Talbot did not succeed in commercially exploiting his invention; in fact, his photo printing business failed. One of the persons whom he employed was a domestic originally from the Dutch province of Noord-Holland, Nicolaas Henneman. Talbot photographed his assistant in 1842.
