Portrait of Bohdan Khmelnytsky

anonymous, 1656

Bohdan Khmelnytsky led the bloody Cossack rebellion of 1648 against the Polish nobility. The uprising marked the end of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and cost many Polish and Jewish lives. The portrait was an illustration in a book about this then recent history. Bohdan died a year after its publication and is honoured in Ukraine to this day as an independence fighter.
