Design for a Breast Ornament

Carlo Ciampoli (active c. 1690-1730), pen and black ink, grey wash, c. 1710

This detailed drawing shows a jewel with rose-cut diamonds that was worn on the breast. At the top is the first part of a necklace that is also set with stones. The jewel’s floral setting in combination with the symmetry and equal size of the precious stones is typical for the beginning of the 18th century.
