Musicians in Charles V’s Funeral Procession

Joannes and Lucas van Doetechum (c. 1530-1605 and ?–1573/89), engraving, 1559

This is the second sheet from a 34-part print series devoted to the funeral procession of Charles V in Brussels on 29 December 1558. The emperor was escorted out by an endless line of dignitaries to the solemn fanfare of a group of trumpeters, complemented by the dull sound of the muffled kettle drum. The musicians seem to be preparing for the departure of the procession.
