Man and Woman at a Spinning Wheel

Pieter Pietersz (1540/41–1603) , Amsterdam, c. 1560-1570, oil on panel

The man holding an open jug attempts to seduce the woman, who, however, looks the other way. In her right hand, she holds a spindle wrapped with yarn, which, together with the spinning wheel, signals her virtue. Yet in her other hand, she holds a yarn winder, representing temptation. The choice between the two is hers.
