Queen Hortense de Beauharnais in her Private Apartments

Closely watched by the bust of her stepfather, Napoleon, Queen Hortense is reading Thérèse philosophe, a pornographic novel, with her hand wandering under her dress and her bottom exposed to the fire. This obscene political caricature mocks the sexual appetite of Louis Bonaparte’s wife, briefly Queen of Holland (1806–1810), who was known for her numerous extramarital affairs.

Description
Obscene afbeelding van Koningin Hortense de Beauharnais in haar privévertrek. Hortense leest, onder het toeziend oog van keizer Napoleon (als borstbeeld), in 'Thérèse philosophe', een pornografisch boek van markies Boyer d'Argens, met haar hand onder haar rok. Haar japon is van achteren open, over de grond rolt een krolse kat. Achter haar naakte billen en benen een brandende haardvuur. Op een tafel en op de grond liggen nog meer boekjes: 'La Pucelle d'Orléans' en 'Le Cabinet des Dames'.
