Gown

Zeeland?, c. 1811–1815, cotton, metal

Although fairly plain, this chequered cotton gown is nevertheless lavishly decorated. Around the neck and cuffs are gathered strips of fabric and twisted cotton cords. The skirt consists of four broad panels, each with a drawstring inside a narrow casing. This dress was supposedly worn by the wife of a mayor in Zeeland during Napoleon’s lightening visit to this province in 1811.
