View of Rouen

Matthijs Maris (1839-1917), black chalk, c. 1870-1872

This drawing probably originated in Maris’ atelier in Paris. He used sketches he had made on the spot in Rouen. Just like in his earlier views of Lausanne, he chose a vantage point from which the cathedral dominates the horizon. He heightened the church tower by elongating its spire.
