Rehearsal in Holland

Johann Heinrich Ramberg (mentioned on object), 1787-10-18

The rise of the Dutch Patriot faction led to the creation of civic militias in which civilians were trained to use weapons. On 28 June 1787, things got out of hand when Stadtholder William V’s wife, Princess Wilhelmina of Prussia, was detained by armed Patriots at Goejanverwellesluis. In this print, Patriots disdainfully taunt and shoot at the figure of an angry Prussian hussar drawn on the wall.
