The Trading Post of the Dutch East India Company in Hooghly, Bengal

There is much activity in and around the fort at the trading post in Hougly, Bengal (northeast India): ships of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) sail along the Ganges River, the director visits an Indian ruler and enslaved people are at work. In the 17th century Bengal was one of the places where the VOC and its employees bought the most people. They transported them to other VOC trading posts around the Indian ocean.

    De factorij of loge van de Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie te Hoegly of Hougly in Bengalen, 1665. Links de rivier de Ganges met enkele schepen. Boven komt een lange stoet Indiërs aangelopen, aangevoerd door een Nederlandse trompetter en vaandeldragers met Nederlandse vlaggen, halverwege de stoet laten twee Nederlanders zich in een palankijn dragen. Rechts hiervan een kampement met een Indiaas hoogwaardigheidsbekleder in een tent, paarden, koeien, olifanten en dromedarissen. Aan de rechterzijde van de voorstelling een begraafplaats. Rechtsonder op een stèle het alliantiewapen van Pieter Sterthemius en Maria Calandrini. Pendant van SK-A-4283.

    • signature, date and inscription, lower right, on the pedestal: ‘Afsbeeldinge Vande Vereenighde / Nederlantze Oostindische Compas / Logie, ofte Hooft Comptoir / in Bengale, / ter Stede Oügelij, / Anno= 1665= / Schuijlenburgh = deiln.’
